"Women
in the Bible Study"
Hannah, A Prayer Warrior
Scripture: 1 Samuel 1:1-2:11
FACTS
Mother of the last judge of Israel,
Samuel
Husband: Elkanah
SUMMARY
Hannah was married to Elkanah.
She was sorrowful in spirit because she was barren. There are many examples
of barren women in the bible such as: Sarah, Rebekah, and Rachel. Barrenness
was consider a curse to a woman during these time. Male children were needed
to continue the patriarchal family lines. Elkanah's other wife, Peninnah,
who had children made it extremely difficult for Hannah by ridiculing her
inability to produce children.
The family came to the worship
at Shiloh each year. After a feast, Hannah literally threw herself at the
mercy of the Lord. She prayed and cried with movements that resembled a drunken
state to the priest Eli. Eli confronted her and questioned her state of mind.
Hannah told him about her prayer and was comforted by Eli in the knowledge
that the Lord had heard her plea. A year later, Hannah had her first child
and with joy she sent her son to be raised with the Eli, the priest. The
Lord blessed continued to bless her womb.
STUDY
Prayer is a conversation with
God. There was a time when we could not go to God on our own. Our sins were
too plentiful and abdominal in God's eyes. Sinners had to bring animal sacrifices
to a priest who used the blood of the sacrifice to make an atonement for
sins. When Jesus died on the cross, he became the ultimate sacrifice. His
blood washed all our sins and made humans right with God again. Now Jesus
sits at the right hand of God as our mediator.
When Hannah was praying, she used
her entire spirit to reach out to God. Eli thought she had drunk too much
wine at the feast, but she was calling and worshiping God, making her presence
known to the spirit of God. God probably gets tired of dull prayers-- the
ones that are repeated out of routine. God knows our hearts, but He loves
when we depend and trust in Him about our needs, troubles, anxieties, finances,
family, job and the list can go on. God knows what is best for us and He
knows when the time is right for us to receive our blessings.
"For I know the plans I have for
you," says the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give
you hope and a future. "(Jeremiah 29:11; NIV)
APPLICATION
Often we are guilty of lagging
in our prayer lives. This sometimes comes as result of having to wait on
God's answer or falling into a boring routine. We must stay in the WORD of
God. There are numerous examples of people who placed their faith in
God.
Read THE HALL OF FAITH: Hebrews
11.
Their situations looked drab and
endless like ours today, but something in their spirit kept them going. We
have an advantage over the Old Testament people --- we can live our lives
here on earth and enjoy a personal relationship with God. Let's pray like
Hannah prayed, put your heart and soul into your prayers. Confess your sins
and ask God to remove them (Read David's confession in Psalm 51). In Philippians
4:6-7 it says, " Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by
prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And
the peace of God, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."
