Having
It All
These days we are told we can
have more of everything. We can own our own house, have a good car, a better
education and more opportunities.
But it seems the "more of everything"
syndrome certainly comes at a price. We are 5 times more likely to have a
divorce than were our forebears, and 10 times more likely to get
depressed.
Perhaps what we forget is that
we always have to give up something in order to have more. We really can't
have it all.
A woman who decides to work to
provide more financial security and material possessions for her family,
may give up a certain closeness with her children or forego time just for
herself.
If a man decides to abandon a
corporate career for a quiet life, he will most likely give up the luxuries
and financial security that corporate life offered.
Yet most of today's stress stems
from wanting more and having it all. When we realise that having it all means
paying a price and giving something up in return, then less stress is placed
upon ourselves.
It is wise to remember that having
more can mean gaining a more stressful lifestyle.
