Are
You Living Your Own Life?
by Robert Taylor
Most would say yes to that question.
Let's take a closer look at it. When you fill your life with the evening
news, television, movies and fantasy books, what have you added to your life
which is truly beneficial?
Very little. Most of the news
to which you are exposed is simply a repeat of what has happened before.
Change the dates, location and names of persons involved and what you have
left is something that has already been reported thousands of times.
There is a definite parallel between
the Mt. Helens eruption and the Chernobyl disaster. They were both widespread,
had devastating effects, and involved thousands of people. Change a few minor
items and the events had basically the same impact.
You can apply the same to murders,
car accidents, airplane crashes, train derailments and so on. Same story,
different players, time frames and locations.
I have not watched the news on
television or listened to it on the radio for many years now. People often
ask how I keep up with what is happening in the world, and how I would know
if a hurricane was coming in and my family and I should evacuate the area.
It is simple. When something directly concerns you, people will definitely
find a way to let you know. We have had people call from as far away as the
state of New York to let us know a hurricane was bearing down on us.
Perhaps as much as 5% of the things
you read in the newspapers and watch on television will apply directly to
you. The remaining 95% (or more) does nothing but waste your valuable
time.
How many people do you know who
get so wrapped up in soap operas, sitcoms and the like it becomes a major
portion of their lives? In most cases it is their means of escaping the realities
of life and living in a dream world. Rather than create a life of their own
they surreptitiously live in a dream world created through fantasy books
and television.
I do not deny that on rare occasions
there will be fantasy books and television programs with some meaningful
content. You will find this to be the exception rather than the norm.
Assuming you devote as little
as two hours each day to watching television and/or reading fantasy books,
you have thrown away 730 hours of time each year. How many things could you
have achieved had you used that time in accomplishing them?
Rather than spend time in dream
worlds created by television and fantasy books, why not devote that time
to creating the world of your own dreams?
